Even though I have photographed so many weddings in my journey as a photographer, there’s always something unique, something special in each wedding that makes me remember it for years to come. It could be the couple’s story, the proposal, the venue, or in some cases, a wedding that wasn’t really a wedding but more of a big party (more on this later!). Anne and Matty are one of the most fun couples I have had the pleasure of working with. The couple had a quirky proposal story, an exciting twist to the wedding, and the yummiest alternative to a wedding cake!
Making their Christmas even more special, Matty proposed to Anne right before they were hosting a Christmas Party. Since it was raining, Anne couldn’t understand why Matty wanted to go out of the house. So, he just made her think he wanted to take a ‘Christmas card photo,’ which, you gotta admit, is kind of genius, mainly because, eventually, Anne agreed and went outside for the photo.
Teddy, a friend of theirs, who was the designated videographer and photographer for the event, was ready at his post outside. The best part about this proposal was how organic the whole thing was. There were so many funny turns, and anything could have gone wrong. So, as Anne and Matty were standing on the front steps with the Christmas lights in the background and the dog barking wildly at every car that drove by, Matty got down on one knee and caught Anne completely off guard. Anne told me that at one point, she even said, “What the f*** are you doing!?” to Matty, to which he sweetly responded, “Sweetheart, I am proposing.” And he wasn’t lying!
Anne obviously said yes, and they were able to surprise Anne’s friends and celebrate that night with everyone. In the days that followed, they were able to surprise the rest of their friends and family and celebrate in person at Christmas.
Now here’s the twist to the wedding. Technically, Anne and Matty were already married by the time this wedding celebration came around. The couple had actually decided to tie the knot last fall, with only a very few people in attendance due to the pandemic. So, long story short, this was the big party that everyone could attend, including Ali, Anne’s sister and her maid of honor, who lives in Hawaii. It was Anne’s Aunt Beth who married the couple back in the fall. And keeping up with that tradition, she performed their “vow renewal” this time around as well.
As a photographer, it’s so heartwarming to see couples being able to enjoy their special day with all of their friends and family again. The COVID pandemic changed weddings as we knew them, but it’s inspiring to see couples still holding on to the essence of weddings and waiting for the time they can celebrate their union with all their family and friends.
The bride had a trick up her sleeve too! To keep an element of surprise, Anne didn’t wear her official wedding gown until the big ceremony. And when she did appear in that gown, she looked ethereal! The flowers on her hair looked so lovely and perfectly complemented her look.
One of my favorite moments from the wedding was the speech by one of the groomsmen. It was hilarious, yet also sincere. And as if things weren’t unique enough at this wedding already, there was the wedding cake which wasn’t really a cake! Instead, Anne and Matty decided on another delicious alternative – a doughnut table! These two really had everything planned out.
Anne and Matty, I wish you both a blissful life together! Thank you for letting me be a part of your celebration and trusting me with your wedding photography. You truly made this wedding your own and ensured that we all had the best time celebrating your union (read: vow renewal). I had such a great time getting to know you both. Keep shining and keep partying together!
