Colby & Matt’s Portsmouth Engagement Session
Photographing couples is my passion but meeting all those amazing and genuine people and listening to their beautiful stories is one of my favorite parts of the job. Every time a couple contacts me, I get so excited at the opportunity of getting to know them as individuals and a couple. And I felt the same excitement when Colby and Matt contacted me for their engagement photo shoot. They are such a lovely couple, and we had such a good time during their engagement session in downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Colby and Matt are one of those couples that you just know are made for each other! They are so much fun together and one of the sweetest couples I’ve met. Colby told me that she had met Matt through a mutual friend. She said, “It was May 18, 2018. I met our mutual friend (Drew) for happy hour. I had just finished up work and was looking for a margarita, so we met at the local taco restaurant. Two minutes in, he mentioned he had invited a friend named Matt (who was also single). I vividly remember him saying, “Matt has a beard! You’ll definitely like him”. We ended up bar-hopping around town talking for hours, shared a first kiss and the rest is history!” Oh, man! That’s super romantic!
My couple had their first date a couple of months after they first met. Colby recalled, “Matt lost my number (LOL) so fate had our back and we ended up reconnecting on a dating app about 3 months later. He wasted little time getting reacquainted and asked me to the most fun official first date, which was a Revivalist concert in Charlotte. To be truthful, I had no idea who they were but spent the whole week listening to them on Spotify, so I didn’t seem like a total loser. He immediately called my bluff, but the night could not have gone better. We ended up hanging out the whole weekend getting to know each other more and that first feeling of real comfort and excitement all came rushing back.” During their engagement session, I saw the same excitement and comfort between my couple. It was so heart-melting and beautiful!
For the session, Colby and Matt flew in from North Carolina. While they live near Charlotte now, Colby once used to live in New Hampshire. So coming back for the photo shoot was a no-brainer for them. Though Portsmouth does have some beautiful beaches, Colby and Matt weren’t really keen on getting photographed there. Instead, they wanted a session with the quaint downtown Portsmouth in the backdrop, which honestly aligns better with their personalities too. And our chosen location didn’t disappoint us at all! The buildings were definitely the highlight (and made for incredible backdrops too!). And the greenery and colorful flowers added some natural vibrance to the photographs.
Colby and Matt were amazing in front of the camera – even when they were just sitting on a bench and talking to each other. The couple also did a cute little dance, which was a perfect moment to capture. As we were walking down the streets of Portsmouth, Colby even noticed a sign with her name on it. And it was at that moment that she hopped on Matt’s back for a surprise piggyback ride! And it was as if Matt had anticipated that moment as he quickly grabbed on to her. See, I told you they were fun!
