As a photographer, I am highly dependent on staying inspired and creative to keep running my business. From getting ideas through other photographers’ work to keep up with what’s trending in the industry, there are many ways to keep those creative juices flowing. And that brings me to one of the things that never fails to inspire me: My couples, especially ones that fight against all odds (and bad weather). Seriously, a couple that can brave bad weather together can do anything together! And I had the opportunity to photograph one such couple engagement session at Alyson’s Orchard recently.
Despite heavy rainfall for days beforehand, Katie and Jake were absolute troopers for going ahead with the initially decided date of their engagement session. Seeing the weather, I even offered them the option to pick another date since the grounds would be muddy. But the bride and groom-to-be didn’t care about any of that. They had their hearts set and their smiles ready for the camera. It turned out to be a beautifully overcast day, and despite the hurdles (read puddles), we came out victorious, and the photographs came out looking stunning!
The location was perfect for Katie and Jake’s session as the flowers at the orchard were in full bloom and made for vibrant backdrops in the photographs. Coincidentally, Katie’s dress even perfectly complemented their shade of pink! It was so heartening for me to see Katie, who is an attorney, and Jake, who works for his family business, simply be there in the moment and make each other laugh. It was as if nothing could dampen their spirits, and oh, the weather tried! Their genuine smiles and love for each other made my work easier and made the photographs look even better. Even though the couple had to cross several puddles to get to some of the shooting locations, they only focused on what they were there for: To celebrate what they shared.
I have always found that one of the privileges of being a photographer is making connections with new people all the time. And I like to spend some time getting to know my couples and helping them get more comfortable with me. That comfort and ease then naturally translates into the photographs too.
I met Katie and Jake for drinks at Spencer’s Place before their shoot. They both enjoyed a drink called Bee’s Knees. And somehow, we ended up talking about bees. And the great thing about these before-the-shoot meet-ups is that sometimes they give us the chance to connect on a whole new level! And thanks to this time that we spent together before the shoot, Katie, Jake, and I now have an inside joke about ‘bee people.’ It was definitely a ‘you had to be there’ kind of a moment, but it brings me so much joy to form this rapport with my couples. It makes the shoot feel less like work and more like a fun session!
Katie and Jake, thank you for inspiring me! Thank you for being such troopers and being classic examples of a power couple. It was a pleasure to take your spring engagement photos, and despite the mud and the puddles, you were terrific models! I wish you both a joyful life ahead, and I hope you continue to fight all hurdles together. I had a fantastic time getting to know you both and being your engagement photographer, and thank you for letting me join you in celebrating this milestone in your lives.
