There is so much to think about when planning a wedding. It can be a tad overwhelming… but with the right guidance- you can have the most amazing wedding team in place ensuring… (almost guaranteeing) a perfect wedding! Today we are focusing on dessert. Not only because I have a wicked sweet tooth- but because I want to take a minute to brag about another incredibly talented artist, Daniel Liberatore. (Who also happens to be a friend! )
Dan is an artist. His medium- Cakes. Now although this post is focusing on Wedding Cakes– Dan’s talent doesn’t stop there. He has crafted incredibly delicious and ever so adorable cakes (and cupcakes!) for all special occasions. Below is a hand-crafted Giraffe Baby shower cake that I hired Master Pieces Cake art to make for my sister Erin’s Baby Shower last April. It tasted even better than it looked! (Which is saying A lot because it looked AMAZING!) Erin still dreams about this sweet confection of perfection.
Years in Business? – I launched MasterPieces Cake Art in August of 2010.
Why you love what you d0 – While I love to create, my true reward is the joyful reaction from my customers when the cake is revealed to them, followed by compliments of how the sweet creation tasted.
What makes you different from your competitors – I have an ability to truly understand my customers’ needs and inspirations, which I can interpret in the form of a cake. It’s also very important to me that their cake tastes as good as it looks. Everything I do is homemade or handmade – even my fondant! Finally, I go well beyond baking and creating and offer many value-adds to my customers. This includes complimentary tastings & consultations, working behind the scenes with other wedding pros, providing cake cutting guides and disassembly instructions to caterers, and offering take-away boxes and freezing instructions.
Ultra Violet Stained Glass Cake (Pictured below)– The designer (Jennifer Matthews) of the photo shoot wanted to incorporate the 2018 color of the year: Ultra Violet, which inspired this cake. I used a similar marbling technique as described earlier, but in light shades of violet. Once the tiers were covered, I hand piped royal icing lines, then painted them in edible metallic rose gold to give it a copper, leaded effect. I finished the cake with a small, darker violet sugar roses.
What’s your favorite kind of project/event? (Do you specialize in any specific niche/style?) – Although I love baking and creating for birthdays, baby showers and other family celebrations, my favorite event is a wedding. A wedding cake is a massive undertaking, and I do it well – from baking to creating to delivery & finishing at the venue. Once I’m commissioned to create a wedding cake, I take on the responsibility of all of the details so that the couple doesn’t have to worry about anything.
Any fun facts or silly information that you think would make you relate to your target client? – Perhaps it’s the Italian in me, but I love to feed people. My cake tastings often include 5 or 6 flavor combinations, rather than the typical four. Sometimes I hear that one member of the couple avoids a particular flavor, I offer it anyway. Then I almost always hear, “I’m not really a fan of such-n-such, but this is really good!”
Tips for Couples planning their wedding? Advice? – Good wedding cake professionals’ calendars fill up fast. Reach out early to ensure that you are able to work with your first choice vendors.
